Watch This Style / Fashion Flashback: Blake Lively Takes On Marilyn Monroe In This Week’s Gossip Girl!

During this week’s episode of Gossip Girl, the show celebrated its 100th episode of upper East side luxury with a tribute to Marilyn Monroe‘s famous song “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.”  Serena, played by Blake Lively, starred in her own dream sequence, recreating the dance number, featuring the male cast, as well as a cameo from Blair herself, played by Leighton Meester, paying tribute to the more demure & classic style icon, Audrey Hepburn.  It took a few days for me to finally find a video of the scene, but I have it here for my Style Darlings.  Also, if you’d like to compare it to the original, there’s also video of Marilyn’s version, something every gal should see! Fashion Flashback: Grace Kelly- The Iconic Oscar Winner & Elegant Star of ‘Rear Window!’

For lack of style news to talk about today (it’s been a rough week), I thought I’d post a little something that I found on YouTube.  This video isn’t even a minute long, but shows (in black & white) Grace Kelly accepting her Oscar for Best Actress in The Country Girl. The American Princess of Monaco hit it big as an actress in the 1950s, but left her career for royal & family life. Check out the quick view of her pale blue Edith Head gown.  Her signature white gloves & classic style are what makes her a timeless icon of style.

Also, I love the Alfred Hitchcock movie Rear Window.  There’s something about it that I haven’t been able to shake since I saw it for the first time this summer.  It would make a really fantastic play (if anyone wants to try & write it with me!).  However, part of what I love about it, besides the story & cinematography of a small apartment complex is the one & only Grace Kelly, who stars with James Stewart in the thriller.  She’s every bit of glamorous with an ease & effortlessness that’s hard to come by now.  So take a look a revamped trailer for the movie & get a good look at Grace’s flawless costumes which make the movie all the more worth seeing!

Fashion Flashback / Magazine Must-Haves: Michelle Williams Channels Marilyn Monroe for Vogue!

I recently posted (here) about Michelle Williams‘ upcoming role as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn, where she plays the troubled sex symbol during one week of filming The Prince & the Showgirl opposite Laurence Olivier in London in 1957.  I’ve been following as much as I can about the film, which is set to premiere on November 4th. (P.S. My editorial on the classic romantic comedy is coming soon on Movie Buzzers!)

The October issue of Vogue showcases the two-time Academy Award nominee, recreates Marilyn’s bombshell & all-American style in a photo shoot by none other than photographer Anne Leibovitz. Michelle is decked out in gorgeous gowns with plunging necklines, decadent diamonds, & the flip side: classic trousers & sweater sets!

While some critics are skeptical about Michelle’s ability to capture the underestimated comedienne, this film is making its world premiere as a centerpiece selection at the New York Film Festival (see my Movie Buzzers article here).

For more news on Marilyn’s inspiring style, check out a previous post in Fashion Flashback to see Dior’s new commercial, starring Charlize Theron, but thanks to technology, we get to see the ill-fated actress exclaim over the J’adore fragrance with fellow style icons, Marlene Dietrich & Grace Kelly.  Hmmm… so many blondes!  What’s a brunette to do?

What do you think of Michelle’s transformation?  Would you have picked someone different to fill in the infamous heels of the blonde legend?  Are you going to see this movie?  Who’s your favorite Old Hollywood style icon?  Happy Styling!

Fashion Flashback: Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, & Grace Kelly’s Cameo in Dior’s New Commerical Starring Charlize Theron!

I had to do a double take when I saw the new commercial for Dior’s J’adore campaign, starring the very beautiful Charlize Theron.  She’s been the spokesmodel for the fragrance for a while now, so it was no surprise to see her at the center of the commercial / short film’s action.  What got me wanting to post about this on Style Darling is the fact that screen legends Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, & Marlene Dietrich appear in the commercial as well.

Marilyn & Grace (yes I’m on a first name basis with them lol) have previously appeared in some form in my Fashion Flashback category, however I can’t help but love that this 1:31 commercial fuses the sirens of the past so naturally with the glamour behind the Dior brand.  Surely, Charlize ranks up there as one of the most gorgeous & accomplished actresses of today.  Here, the house of Dior celebrates the history of fabulous icons of style.

Take a look at the commercial below to see what all the fuss is about.  If you’re interested in buying the fragrance, take a click on over to Ulta, where you can buy a 1.0 oz. bottle for $60.00, 1.7 oz. for $77.00, or 3.4 oz. for $90.00.  Remember, if you’re an Ulta shopper & have a rewards club card, you can earn points to qualify for free gifts like cosmetics, more fragrances, or a salon treatment! Making the investment in a timeless perfume will pay off in the future too!

Fashion Flashback: Grace Kelly Immortalized With Barbie!

Oscar winner Grace Kelly is famous for being one of the most beautiful actresses of all time & now Mattel is helping immortalize the beloved star of films like Rear Window, Country Girl, & Dial M for Murder.  Usually, I feature looks that can help real Style Darling emulate celebrity vintage style, but I was so excited to learn of the Barbie dolls, honoring the very fashionable actress.  Not only was she revered as n actress & style icon, but she eventually became a real princess, marrying Prince Rainier of Monaco.

Courtesy of In Style, there are three looks that are being recreated in doll form, including a chic floral dress made famous by the actress when she wore it to the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, as pictured above.  During her time at Cannes, she met her future husband & her life was changed forever.  This doll costs $135.00 & it set to hit shelves in October.  The gorgeous blue gown pays homage to Grace in To Catch a Thief, one of her many thriller films under the direction of suspense master Alfred Hitchcock.  She starred opposite Cary Grant.  Lastly, her demure & regal wedding gown that she wore on April 19th 1956.  This doll will go for about $175.00, which is pretty steep, but if you’re a die-hard Barbie collector, it’s totally worth it!

“The dress epitomizes Grace Kelly’s overall classic style that really transcends trends,” reveals Toby Boshak, Executive Director of the Princess Grace Foundation. For more information on where you can get these dolls, check out Barbie Collector.  Also, if you’d like to see more of Grace Kelly’s glamorous style, take a look at Vanity Fair‘s look book. Happy Styling!
