Watch This Style: Female Empowerment In Music Videos Never Looked So Good (& Stylish)!

While trying to catch up with the latest music burning up iTunes, I’m guilty of surfing around YouTube to see what some of my favorite & the most talked about recording artists are up to these days, especially since it’s been a while since I posted music videos on Style Darling. One thing has been made clear: Female empowerment is a strong message in so many of the most current pop & rap hits, from well-established artists, to the most controversial ones, & to the up & comers who are certainly making headlines of their own.

Meghan Trainor, Iggy Azalea & Rita Ora, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, & Nicki Minaj.

Of course, I need to talk about style here too, so here goes. First & foremost, I am obsessed with newcomer Meghan Trainor & her positive body image-themed booty shaker “All About That Bass,” which I’ve shared with so many friends in the last two days. Then, my favorite Aussie Iggy Azalea teamed up with Brit singer Rita Ora for a Kill Bill homage in the music video for “Black Widow,” where the duo look sleek battling against the likes of villain Michael Madsen. Katy Perry‘s party pop song “This Is How We Do” takes fans on a modern art museum tour, making references to pop art, as well as the more geometric side of artists like Mondrian (at the same time celebrating the carefree party lifestyle in a rainbow of wig choices & latex outfits). Taylor Swift‘s uber-pop debut single off her upcoming 1989 album, “Shake It Off” shows the former country crooner as a quirky dancer sporting a tutu, cheerleader uniform, daisy dukes & mega hoops, a letterman jacket & pleather skinnies, as well as an all-black Audrey Hepburn-inspired ensemble. Lastly, the most buzzworthy of them all is Nicki Minaj‘s ” Baby Got Back” reboot, “Anaconda,” which glorifies a healthy rear end in the most explicit & aggressive ways possible, but I say that if she’s got it (which she totally does!), she should flaunt it.

Which music video is repeating on your flat screen? Which artist’s message most applies to you? Who do you think went too far? Red Carpet Review: The Wild Looks From The MTV VMAs, Featuring Ciara, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, & More!

Music’s most popular & praised hit Brooklyn this weekend to celebrate the MTV VMAs. The ceremony featured a slew of performances that left audiences with their jaws on the floor & many heads scratched. I’m going to talk about talent here. I loved seeing Lady Gaga back in action, as well as the throwback to Justin Timberlake‘s career since his days in NSYNC & also, a memorable Bruno Mars who hit the stage with his new single, “Gorilla.”

However, we must consider the red carpet, which featured a lot of controversial looks, as well as elegant surprises. My favorites include sophisticated risk-takers like Selena Gomez showing her rock side in Atelier Versace, Katy Perry‘s leopard, leggy look by Emanuel Ungaro, Ciara in a Givenchy Couture, & Lady Gaga herself in a black Elvira-inspired look by Prabal Gurung. Of course, Taylor Swift looked stunning in Hérvé Leger & Naya Rivera‘s cut-out black gown was chic, but these girls need to learn to loosen up.

Which looks are your favorite? Which performance were you talking about the most on Monday morning? Do you think Miley Cyrus went too far during her performance? While I’ve been clicking through gallery after gallery of the latest runway shots of the Fall 2013 Haute Couture season, I’ve found the crowning achievement in the latest Elie Saab collection. Every single look featured in Paris is red carpet worthy, especially b/c of the stunning hues like scarlet, emerald, gold, silver, cobalt, & navy. These are sure to attract the likes of Eva Longoria, Jessica Alba, Amy Adams, Zoe Saldana, Taylor Swift, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale, & Emma Stone. The glitz & glamour is enhanced by flattering silhouettes including long-sleeves, sweetheart necklines, A-line skirts, & column gowns!

Runway Rundown: Alice + Olivia’s Resort 2014 Collection!

There are just so many resort collections to cover & only one Style Darling to do the job, however one of my personal favorites of the season is the latest Alice + Olivia Resort 2014 Collection, which features plenty of youthful, yet sophisticated separates & dresses that are red carpet-ready & perfect for upcoming magazine editorials. The line includes feminine details like lace, bows, A-line skirts, floral prints, & fun colorblocking schemes which are sure to attract the likes of Taylor Swift, Diane Kruger, Emmy Rossum, Kerry Washington, & Zoe Saldana.

I love these designs by Stacey Bendet, which seem to be inspired by the fun & flirty nature behind the Betsey Johnson legacy, with a mix of preppy Michael Kors in there too. I’ve been watching a lot of Johnson’s reality show XOX Betsey Johnson on the Style Network, finding her efforts to rebuild her brand pretty inspiring myself. Let’s hope that color is here to stay, even as we’re still delving into summer with fall trends quickly on their way.
